Probably OK: A small drop of red blood on your stool or toilet paper is most likely from a hemorrhoid. These are small dilated blood vessels that can form near the anus as a result of constipation, sitting for long periods of time, or after having a baby. They are fragile and bleed easily. You should see a doctor who can easily take a look and tell you if that's the problem. Blood in stool? See a doc!

Yes/no: If concerned, you can take a diaper with the material to your pcp and a test can be run on the debris. Watermelon can pass through the kids system with little alteration of the color as can things like tropical punch (in the red of course).

i recently had the stomach flu and had blood in stool. went to er said it will go away. i still see spots of blood in stool. its been 7 days. normal?

Not normal: It is never normal to have blood in your stools. That said, it doesn't mean it has to be due to something serious as hemorrhoids are both common & a common cause of blood in stool. Blood in the stool should be evaluated. If bright red or maroon then a lower GI tract scope (colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, proctoscopy) is first step. If black bloody stool then upper scope indicated. See a GI doctor.

could i have blood in stool if my hemoglobin was 15.1? i saw red spots in one of my stools, i am not sure if it is blood or if it's from pizza and pasta i ate two days ago? i also had two pieces of desert which contained raspberry preserves filling?

: The right test to use would be the fecal occult blood test strip best coordinated by your doc in the community. It would be unusual to have rectal bleeding with no other symptoms and that has never happened in the past and would favor poorly digested food as the source, but if it becomes recurrent testing should be in place.

OK unless recurring: Even if it is blood, a small amount, one event would not be anything to worry about.  It could be due to the thermometer causing some mild trauma or constipation.  It could also not even be blood.  I would have it checked if it is recurring or if there is a larger amount of blood.

for almost a month now when i wipe its blood on the wipe, ive checked to see if theres blood in stool but dont see any at all, its happened before but i just thought ive wiped too much and thats why i had switched to wet wipes, please help?

: The presence of blood means a trip to the doctor.  Please don't let your mind run away with frightening thoughts.  The reason may be simple and easy to correct but remotely could be more serious.  Not seeing blood in the stool may mean it's microscopic but still there. Peace and good health.

Not normal, get help: Blood in stool is a warning sign. Brisk bleeding warrants emergency care. Causes of bleeding may be predictable (e.G rectal trauma), but evaluation is always appropriate. A rule of thumb (but not absolute): black stool means bleeding comes from upper GI tract; grape jelly stool from small bowel; silver stool from biliary tree; burgundy stool from right colon; red blood from left colon to anus.

A lot of things: Many things can cause blood in the stool (i presume you talk about bright red blood and not black tarry stools) including simple things like hemorrhoids or fissures or more serious things like colitis, polyps, or even cancer.  Any blood in the stool should be evaluated.  Visit your family doc and he/she will likely send you to a gastroenterologist.  Best to you.
