AnotherDingForWhitey: White in the mouth usually means dead tissue, like black when on the rest of the body. Yes, a canker sore should hurt, but not always. Especially if it's a variant sore, or the result of minor trauma. But I'd have it checked by a doctor if it doesn't go away within two weeks (three at most), sore or not. Especially if you've smoked or chewed a lot of tobacco or other irritant (like betel nuts)

Aphthous ulcer: Likely an aphthous ulcer (canker sore). Self limited. Treat with OTC meds, saline rinse, avoid spicy foods. Should resolve within a week. If not, see oral surgeon.

More info needed....: How long has the sore been there? A week, a month, or a year? Smoker or dipping tobacco user? Without seeing the lesion and answers to these questions, its hard to tell what it might be. If it has been there longer than two weeks, see an oral surgeon for an evaluation.

Hard to say: It could be a cyst or an abscess , a lesion of some sort....your description of a bump or sore is vague. How long did you have it? Is it growing ? Etc.. Best to have a dentist take a look, the sooner the better. Good luck and stay safe.

See a dentist: Canker sores appear in the mouth area (tongue, gums, lip) and are small, shallow ulcers that make talking and eating uncomfortable they are gray in color and have a distinct edge. The sores will usually heal within 10 to 14 days, without treatment. There are special rinses that contain anesthetic solutions that can help with the pain. Avoid spicy and acidic food. Avoid trauma to the area soft diet.

It might be...: ..A blocked salivary gland or it might be an infection.  Either way you should seek help from a dentist.

Ulcers: No.  They are the same.  Cankers or ulcers can occur anywhere on mucous membranes.  That includes any part of the mouth.  But, they are not worse just because of location.  Although, they may hurt worse.
