i looked at the back of my throat today and i have a white patch on one of my tonsils. my symptoms just started today. what should i do?

Oral lavage.: One day of a painless white patch may be a mucus plug.  If there is no redness and no pain, and it is of recent onset, I would gargle with salt water to try to get rid of it.  In the absence of symptoms, I would not worry.  If the white patch persists for more than 2 to 3 weeks despite gargling, see an ENT doctor.

Rule out fungus: The white patches could represent a fungal infection.  If you have been on antibiotics, fungus infection may occur.  The fact that the white patches are also in the back of the throat suggests some type of infectious disease.  My advice is to see an ENT specialist for a specific diagnosis.

You can develop hypopigmentation form chronic irritation- so if your child is a lip-licker, it could be that. Thee are certain fungal infections that present as white patches. Dr. can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease throat pain.
