two weeks ago i was at er w/ pyelonephritis (blood in urine, flu like symptoms, extreme flank pain). given iv abx & oral bactrim finished 9 days ago. pain is improving but i see increasing amounts of black flecks in urine. urinalysis clean. concerns?

: Proper treatment of acute pyelonephritis is for at least 2 weeks and seldom with Bactrim. you could have had renal colic and might be passing gravel. It is strange that your urinalysis is normal while passing 'flakes'. suggest you see a urologist. In the meantime drink plenty of water

Likely crystals: Your pee often contains urate crystals which reflect the breakdown products of protein metabolism. Crystals will often reflect light in a way they could appear this way. They would be more prominent in more concentrated specimens. You have likely had occasional urine analysis in the past ( standard test) &amp; if so these would be considered a normal findings.

Black flecks: First make sure that the urine is not mixed with vaginal debris such as left over uterine shedding from a recent period. If a clean catch urinalysis shows black flecks, a urinary bladder lesion such as a melanoma would be suspected. Consulting a urologist would be recommended if repeated flecks are noted in your urine.

You need an exam: In a woman, these could  be small vaginal blood clots.   Could be "products of conception".  Unless something has been introduced into your bladder, I really can't think of anything else that could behave this way.  You need a pelvic exam and a urinalysis and a pregnancy test..

Explanations : I am not sure as well. Prepare few samples of urine and check if these flakes really present in all of them. If yes - go to Doctor. If not -  nothing to worry about if you do not have any other problems. Occasionally some flakes can be in urine due to different foods you had this day.

this morning i saw a dried-up red fleck of blood in my urine (i touched it, it was blood). by the end of the day, my period started. i'm not sure if the blood was from my period or my urine because it was dried-up and a fleck. what can it be?

: This is likely related to your period starting. But, if you develop urinary symptoms like burning, urinating more frequently, feeling like you need to urinate all the time, then call your doctor. If it recurs after your period ends, then call your doctor and have your urine tested. Good luck!

See doctor ASAP: Flank pain, blood in the urine, urgency, painful urination- all could be consistent with urinary tract infection . Other condition such as kidney stone can also happen along with the urinary tract infection. You should see your md as soon as possible and have yourself checked and treated. Good luck.
