Accepted Answer

How much whiskey?: Your risk of alcohol-related liver disease is largely dependent on how much you consume & for how long.  If by "at least one whiskey/day" you really mean three or four, then yes you are placing your liver at risk.  Risk is further magnified by added insults to your liver (medications, occupational exposures, underlying familial or viral liver diseases, or prior cirrhosis) as well as female gender.

i have had 8 shots of whiskey today and just took nyquil  and just read not to do that will i be ok?

Accepted Answer

Not recommended: You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with NyQuil. if you experience a fever, chills, joint pain or swelling call 911.

i took 5mg valium last night at 9pm, now it's 9 pm next day and i want to drink a can of beer and shot of whiskey, is it safe ?

Accepted Answer

Yes and no: One's use of alcohol can create problems that prompted the use of diazepam.  So perhaps better not to drink alcohol?   Talk with your physician.   In terms of adverse effects from mixing the two after 24 hours, I think one is safe unless one has a major liver problem.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely, but: it depends on several factors.  Hair follicle drug screens are affected by:  1. time between consumption and hair collection, 2. type of hair collected (from scalp or body, as growth rates differ), 3. type of test -- the "standard or 5-panel" test generally does not include a test for alcohol.  Consuming only "one shot" or 1-2 ounces of hard alcohol probably is not enough to cause a positive result

Accepted Answer

No: Obviously, not a good idea to mix alcohol and medications, which you seem to be aware of.  however, a one time occurrence of this type is not going to cause any significant harm.  Biggest risk with this combination is stomach ulcers, so don't make a habit of it.

Accepted Answer

Avoid those drinks: People who need Xanax (alprazolam) or use Xanax (alprazolam), or similar drugs, should not drink alcoholic drinks. Alcohol (ethanol) is a chemical that affects nerve cells and changes brain function, and thus should be avoided in people who already need neurological or psychiatric medications.

is it ok to have 1-2 shots of whiskey a month while on daily lansoprazole for hiatus hernia and gerd?

Accepted Answer

It is ok: limited alcohol use will probably be ok. as long as it is not worsening your GERD symptoms.  At your age you may want to consider GERD surgery as a long term cure for this problem

Accepted Answer

Alcohol pharyngitis?: As a general rule, alcohol alone should not be producing a sore throat. Although anything is possible, suspect you may have acquired a viral infection.  Without seeing you and assessing this it is impossible to say how long it will last.

Expect clean: Urine should be free of alcohol at 42 hours after the last drink.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

is it ok to take a few shots of whisky after drinking predsinolone pill?

Accepted Answer

Generally, no,: Whatever you are taking the prednisolone for is not likely to be helped by adding alcohol - particularly since with my patients a "few" generally means WAY more than 2.  Steroids all have the potential to increase stomach acid and increase the likelihood of gastritis/ulcers/bleeding and alcohol adds to that risk. It also has adverse effects on the immune system, as do steroids. Talk to your doctor
