Not much: Cataract surgery is very rewarding for the patient and surgeon - i enjoy it immensely.  Of course, with any procedure there are potential side effects and complications but these are usually small compared with the visual benefits.  This is an exciting time!

Usually: Lenses are rarely put in the wrong place after cataract surgery, even when it is complicated and there are problems.  Lenses get out of place when there are variations in the internal anatomy of the eye, fragile components which are unpredictable and some degrees of trauma.  These can usually be fixed at a second surgery.

Accepted Answer

Yes, that is routine: A cataract is the clouding of the eye's natural lens.  Virtually all cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and placing an artificial intra-ocular lens (iol) implant in its place.  There are some newer more advanced iols that act like intraocular invisible bifocals to minimize need for postoperative glasses (multifocal iols) or to treat pre-exisiting astigmatism (toric iol).

Rarely: Most cataract surgery is performed under local anesthesia, sometimes with a little assist intravenously but not asleep.  The only patients consistently put to sleep are children, and adults with movement disorders and mental deficiency;.

Congenital cataract: Congenital cataracts can be difficult to remove. However a pediatric ophthalmologist experienced in this type of surgery will do a good job for you.

Accepted Answer

Depends: If your vision declines from its baseline, this may be related to your cataract.  It is common for non or mildly symptomatic congenital cataracts to progress in early adulthood.   Cataract surgery can be of benefit at that point.

is it possible to have an allergy to acrylic cataract lenses they put in surgically to correct cataracts?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: "allergic reactions" do not occur to either silicone or acrylic intraocular lenses.  Very rarely people have issues where the lenses need to be removed or exchanged for a different material (silicone for acrylic or vice-a-versa) but this is exceedingly rare.  In these situations there are usually other factors in the eye contributing to the need for exchange and not an allergic reaction.

what anesthetic are you put under for cataract surgery?

Accepted Answer

Local anesthesia: Cataract surgery is almost always done with the patient awake. The ophthalmologist will put anesthetic eye drops in the eye, and sometimes may do an injection for a retrobulbar nerve block. The anesthesiologist may give some mild sedation to help the person relax and lie still comfortably. General anesthesia, or being put under, is not necessary for cataract surgery.

i'm just wondering, if you've had cataract surgery and had new lens put in, can you still use the sunbed or not?

Accepted Answer

Yes: You will still need to wear eye protection, though. Life before and after cataract surgery does not really change. Only difference is that should see better.
