Is removing a congenital cataract when you are an adult worth it?

Depends: If your vision declines from its baseline, this may be related to your cataract. It is common for non or mildly symptomatic congenital cataracts to progress in early adulthood. Cataract surgery can be of benefit at that point.

Sometimes YES: Congenital Cataract can cause amblyopia/lazy eye: occurs when eye does not have visual input to the brain for the connection to develop. If told have severe amblyopia, it is unlikely for a cataract surgery to give 20/20. But there are Pts who were told they had a lazy eye & had significantly improved VA after cataract surgery. Depends: Was this a unilateral cataract so the vision is permanently down in that eye (amblyopia)? Or is this a polar cataract with generally good vision? Or has your congenital cataract started to grow and is now obstructing the vision? You need an evaluation by an ophthalmologist to make these distinctions to see if removal would be beneficial.
