Different: A neuroma is a tumor made of nerve and scar tissue.  A ganglion cyst is an exvagination of a joint capsule, usually the dorsal joint capsule of the wrist.   Either one can cause pain, and either can be excised surgically.  The classic treatment for a ganglion cyst is to drop a very heavy book on it, rupturing the cyst, leading to its classic name "bible cyst".  No joke.

Irreversible nerve damage can occur in carpal tunnel syndrome. So it should be evaluated by a physician.
