Many choices: There are a number of medications that are effective for panic attacks. I suggest you consult with a psychiatrist for guidance.

Not best combo: With higher degrees of anxiety I would recommend lexapro (escitalopram). Start at 10mg at night for couple weeks , then up to 20 mg nightly. Would not mix the combo u have. Drowsiness is the main issue.  Would also recommend a clinical psychologist or License Clinical Social Worker to discuss and really have you get into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Not enough: Problem with xanax (alprazolam) (and many similar anxiety drugs) is that it wears off. Another problem is that some doctors don't worry enough about this "short"-coming when they prescribe xanax (alprazolam). If you are not controlling anxiety with current dose, going higher adds to the risk that you are going to have even worse anxiety, as the xanax (alprazolam) wears off. This is a bad vicious cycle that you don't want to get into.

Xanax (alprazolam): If those are prescribed by your doctor, & i hope they are, then your best advice should come from the prescribing doc. Who knows your case well.

Xanax (alprazolam): This is not a high dose. Hope u r working closely with your doctor & counselor on cognitive therapy which is essential to concur your fears/anxieties in addition to the medication.

Pain intolerance: Xanax (alprazolam) & pain meds. Can be addicting in the long-run. Wondering if u try non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs first, or antidepressants that would work for your type of pain such as cymbalta. Discuss your options with your primary care doc.

Add therapy: Certainly the medication may be adjusted as there are various choices in a situation and some people may respond better to one medication as compared to another. Therapy should probably be added to the treatment mix as there are various techniques that may be helpful in reducing your symptoms.

i have been on 3mg a day of xanax for about 5 years for anxiety disorder. i am also on 40 mg a day of paxil for depression and lisinoprinol for high blood pressure. is there something else i could take in place of the xanax (an herbal remedy) to come off

Buspar (buspirone) : If you have generalized anxiety disorder consider Buspar (buspirone) It is non habit forming. Deplin is a methyfolate supplements which can make your medication more effective.  You are going to need to be weaned off of Xanax since you have been on it for so long. For panic disorder consider klonopin which is a longer acting bbenzodiazipine like xanax. You may get less peaks and troughs
