An infarct.: When a complete stroke occurs or cerebral infarction, the blood supply to a part of the brain is stopped, usually by a blood clot in the artery supplying that portion of the brain. Initially that part of the swells a bit and then dies. Over time the dead brain tissue is replaced by fluid to keep the pressure between the skull and the brain normal. Dead brain tissue is called encephalomalacia.

Simple concepts: Stroke involves blood flow to brain and if blocked, brain tissue dies causing symptoms such as unilateral paralysis, or speech deficit. Causes may include hypertension, smoking, high blood lipids, diabetes, hyperhomocysteinemia, but also, could be secondary to primary cardiac problem.

Lower stroke volume: If part of your heart are not properly innervated, the muscle will not contract as needed and the stroke volume may diminish.  Uneven contraction may lead to thrombus formation and potentially stroke, check with your cardiologist.

Exercise!!: Stretching, yoga, TaiChi, conditioning, physical therapy......

You get the idea. Only very hard work will get you better, but if you do it it will get you better. Maybe not to your prior baseline, but it will help a lot.

: Blood clots inside the body usually resolve in a matter of a few days.
Our blood is equiped with certain enzymes/proteins which have the ability to dissolve blood clots such that these will not be visible after 1-5 days but it all depends on the size of the blood clot.

Get Evaluated: Any major serious illness can result in decreased immunity to infection and there is no direct link between stroke and decreased immunity.  My suggestion is to see an immunologist and let that doctor evaluate your dad's immune system to see if there is a specific problem.  I would also make sure he has had all of his appropriate vaccines brought up to date.

End of Life: I am going to speak from my years working in hospice and with terminally ill patients. Why are you letting this matter.? This 90 year old woman is dying.  She should not be forced to eat; forced to be alert; forced to stay here any longer.  She is dying and she is exhausted; she has internal work to do to prepare for death.  This is a beautiful time.  Please let it be serene and peaceful.
