Usually: The retained blood clot stimulates the bone to fill in the socket with time. Sometimes the tissue will slough and look like a white patch.  If unusual or disconcerting symptoms, see the surgeon for an exam.

Exhudate, pus: If there is pus or exhudate draining in the area you may have an infection and should get antibiotic treatment, dry socket is very painful.

i had all wisdom teeth extracted about 5 days ago, and its been swelling up for a few days. it hurts occasionally. it doesn't look like dry socket.

Swelling post-ext: If the swelling is subsiding each day, that sounds normal. If the swelling is increasing each day it might be infected. In any case, you should call the dentist who removed your teeth and let him\her know. You will probably be asked to come back to the office for an evaluation.

can you have dry socket even if theres no visual signs of it? i have severe pain (2 wisdom teeth out on thursday) but the dentist said it doesnt look like dry socket at all because the clot is there & looks completely normal?

: If the clot is present and no exposed bone than no dry socket. Pain and swelling is expected after surgical extractions of wisdom teeth. Trauma, pressure, possible grinding of bone, all can contribute to severe pain during extractions of wisdom teeth. Follow post op. directions to reduce pain and swelling and go back for follow up exam.

Don't be scared: What you describe is not typical of oral cancer.  Most common  cause of swelling is infection, as in an abscessed tooth, which your Dentist would have diagnosed.  An extra tooth or bone-damage from cancer would have appeared on the x-ray.  Sometimes your body grows benign boney bumps (exostoses).  If you are still concerned, seek examination by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Depends: anesthesia: If you have general anesthesia (put to sleep) or IV sedation, it wll most likely be a non-event. If you have local anesthesia, you will experience some pressure from the procedure. Your extracting dentist should be able to guide you in greater detail based on your specific situation.

It varies.  Some: Patients experience no discomfort - in fact don't even know that they are erupting while others are in severe pain.  Best to be evaluated by your dentist.   Hope this helps.

Varies: Wisdom tooth eruption will be different for everyone.  Sometimes there is no pain.  But frequently there is some redness, pain, swelling, and can be pressure on the other teeth.  The best thing to do is to, have your dentist evaluate your wisdom teeth and provide the appropriate treatment.
