Balance: The antidote for Coumadin (warfarin) is vitamin k which is in a lot of foods, but most heavily in dark green leafy vegetables. My advice to my patients typically is to eat a balanced diet. Do not work hard to avoid or eat extra of these items, just eat a balanced diet with some vegetables every day and then work with your anticoagulation clinic or your physician to titrate your dose to your diet.

Anything. & Careful!: First of all pay attention to the fact that warfarin therapy is life saving in range and life threatening outside that range. Technically you can and should have a varied, healthy diet.  That said, you must be cognizant of the fact that dark leafy greens absolutely affect the pt/inr.  On the other hand if you eating consistent amounts of greens, your levels should not vary.  Check pt-inr regularly.

Accepted Answer

Yes: The anticoagulant effect of warfarin may be decreased if taken with foods that are rich in vitamin k. Some of these foods include dark, leafy greens, dried herbs, scallions, broccoli, and cucumber. Vitamin e might increase warfarin effect. Cranberry juice also may increase warfarin effect. You should be alright with yogurt. Be consistent with your diet and take warfarin at the same time each day.

Vit k : Foods that contain vit k can reduce the effect of coumadin (warfarin). Such as fresh greens etc. The list of foods and meds that can interact is extensive. Please call your doctor or pharmacist.

Most anything.: Greens ( spinich, kale, mustard, turnip greens) can blunt the effect on the coumdain on thinning your blood.  The important thing is, if you eat certain foods reguarly, you will not have wild swings on your pt. If you suddenly binge on foods such as these, that is a different story.  And the taking of antibiotics can increase your pt.

Best to avoid: Even cooked green vegetables has vit.K.

Accepted Answer

Need to monitor PT: If you change your diet you should get your blood tested more frequently to make sure that your pt is at the desired level. Discuss your proposed change in diet with your doctor to arrange for more frequent testing.

: If you like cucumbers and are not allergic to them, why not. I don't know of any contraindications of eating cucumbers while on warfarin.

Accepted Answer

Yes. : I'm personally not a fan of strawberries, but by all means, enjoy those strawberries. Just remember to stick to a regular diet that doesn't have any wild swings in what you eat and check your inr periodically. Discuss with your pcp, who should ultimately keep on top of your Coumadin (warfarin) therapy.
