Hard nails: Your nails can vary in hardness based on not only nutritional status, but on climate changes, and hormonal changes.  Thyroid conditions especially have a large effect on nail growth and brittleness.  Fungus infection and repeated minor trauma to the hands can also have an effect on nail growth as can smoking and skin conditions such as psoriasis. It's best  to review your situation with your MD.

Very unlikely: A stubbed toe has only a brief small injury. Toenails are hard and slowly growing. They get ingrown when they are cut or picked too short and are slowly bent inward chronically as they grow by overlying skin or tight toed shoes. Stubbing a toe may cause an already ingrown toe nail to become newly painful.

Have it evaluated.: Ingrown toenails can be temporarily remedied through soaking your foot in warm water, removal of embedded debris from the nail borders, and applying an antibiotic ointment to temporarily soften the corners.  If you have continued pain, redness or drainage, get it looked at by a professional as you may need to have the ingrown nail border removed and you may need antibiotics.

No worries: Happened to me 8 months ago. The nail is attached to the nail bed. When injury occurs, the union between the two gets disrupted and bleeding occurs under the nail. Eventually it will fall off and a new nail will grow in. this process takes about 8-10 months. Mine is almost grown back. No pain....no worries. If it gets red, swollen or hurts, see a Podiatrist.

Count on it.: When the nail is removed, without removing or destroying the nail root, it will almost always grow back. In fact it will probably either look the same or be worse. The cause of the deformity should be considered. Is the thickness caused by trauma (a cow stepping on your toe) of fungal infection. The toe fungal infection can be treated with varying degrees of success. The post traumatic needs surge.

Need to soak longer: It should come off but any hard dirt embedded in the nailbed may require pedicure support, or a footbath for a longer soak. Showers usually take shorter  time than taking a bath, and longer soaks are necessary if the dirt is that hardened.

hi i bumped my toe in january this year and half of my nail came off and grew back. the other half is now hard and has discoloration. what can i do?

Dystrophic nail: I would let the discolored thickened nail grow up the edge, it shocked the growth matrix when you hit it- hence growing poorly. Would trim as usual and have patience- should eventually after few rounds of trimming look near or like normal- this is best case scenario. Unless there are other factors stated.

i lost some of my big toes nail by stubbing it with a lot of force on accident the skin underneath has gone hard there was some black but i picked it all out no bleeding pain is gone is this normal its been 4 days since it came off its 5% of nail?

Accepted Answer

: You lost 5% of your big toe nail is what I understand your question without pain or bleeding.  Or the nail came off leaving 5% of the nail attached.  Either scenario without infection the nail will grow out. Takes 6 months to grow out completely.  Any bleeding has stopped. No other signs of infection   Should be fine with time. Trim any sharp edges.

Possible Fungus: This may be a sign that you have a fungus infection of the toenail (onychomycosis). You should have it checked by a dermatologist.
