See an allergist: That would help better, although getting a humidifier might help, but momentarily, if you really live in a very dry environment, it would soothe some. Looking for a cause for your symptoms and treating it is useful in the long term, start with your doctor, check aaaai.org or acaai.org for an allergist in your area, good luck

is it safe to use eucalyptus oil in a humidifier for a 16mnth old with blocked and runny nose?

I would not: Nasal congestion at that age is aggravated by the smaller size of the nasal passages which make any swelling/drainage block things easier. I find ANY FUME/ODOR producing agent will act as a nasal irritant &amp; worsen things. I never suggest these things before school age, when the nasal passages are big enough to avoid this effect. Clean out the nose with saline wash &amp; use water in the humidifier.

my 8 month old baby keeps coughing has runny nose always congested we've taken her to the dr nothing has helped we sleep with a humidifier:(?

Nasal saline: You can try nasal saline or use of a bulb syringe to clean out the nose. If a family member or household member smokes encourage them to stop. If you have pets try to keep them away from the child. You could consider hypoallergenic pillow and mattress covers. Cold medicines are not recommended at this point.

Infant coughs: Yes, post-nasal drip can cause cough in an infant. Certainly bronchiolitis is common in infants, but to diagnose a physical exam needs to be done. This past year, the benefit of nebulizers for bronchiolitis has been called into question. The only way to tell if your child would benefit from bronchodilators is to visit the pediatrician where they can give a trial neb treatment to see if it helps.

Exam: You may assume with the history that baby may get another ear infection, but greenish nasal drainage can be normal.The only way to know for sure is to have baby checked. Validating the number and type of infections is important if tubes are likely at some point.

not necessary: While a humidifier can increase the moisture in the air, it can also promote dust mite growth and if not cleaned properly, lead to mold growth and dispersion.  Treatment for runny nose should be aimed at the underlying cause--allergy, sinus infection, etc.  If symptoms are chronic, consider seeing an allergist to find out specifically what the trigger is.

i have chronic rhinitis and also mild sleep apnea for which i use a resmed autopap with auto humidifier, and a nasal pillow mask. unfortunately even with the humidifier and automatic pressure my nose gets more blocked?

: Switch to a full- face mask. Many SA patients go through several masking systems before finding a good option. Sensitive or unpredictable nasal response makes a full- face mask a better fit. It permits nasal breathing when clear and mouth breathing when the nose is less cooperative.

Identify the trigger: While there are many causes for runny nose, persistent runny nose with itching, sneezing, congestion, may be due to allergies.  While there are many antihistamines and nasal sprays available to treat allergies, it is prudent to identify the trigger.  If there is a way to avoid the trigger, that could result in less medication and less symptoms.  See an allergist.
