Gynecologist: Gynecologists are trained in the management of Bartholin's cysts and abcesses.  These can be treated with minor surgical procedures that can be performed in the office.

In my opinion, it is better to marsupialize these in the office rather than to just drain them.  The procedure is a little more involved than drainage, but recurrence is far less.

i had a bartholin abscess drained yesterday, and the doctor said she didnt get it all out. today the swelling of my labia has only gotten worse. is this a bad sign?

: No, it's not really. If the cyst was not taken out completely, it can recur. Swelling one day after the procedure is common. You can apply cold pack for alleviating the pain and swelling. Take care!

Warm compresses: Warm compresses are better than cold to help the cyst drain. Bartholin's gland cysts sometimes go away on their own but sometimes they have to be surgically drained and packed in order to heal up. Any abscess that does not drain fully may need to be surgically opened and drained to resolve. If it is not resolving with warm soaks and compresses see a doctor.

Bartholin gland: Bartholin glands can become cysts then get infected and cause some pretty bad pain. I would recommend getting seen by your doctor ASAP or visiting an ER for evaluation. They're often treated with drainage and antibiotics, both of which can get you feeling back to normal soon.

Heat packs and time: Healing is promoted by blood flow which can be enhanced with warmth and continued good health and exercise. Don't smoke and give it some time. Your body will reabsorb the fluid. Some compression to the area or a pillow to lift your bottom when you're sleeping may help the fluid travel back up. Good luck!

Infected?: A Bartholin gland is usually "lanced" when it's infected.  This treats the infection, but the gland stays in place, and in these cases there is a very high chance of the gland enlarging and becoming bothersome again (not necessarily infected).  The best time to completely remove an enlarged Bartholin gland is when it is not infected, so you may try for a more complete excision at this point.
