Take treatment: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, iron deficiency is easily treated with over the counter iron supplements. You should be under the care of an OB and s/he should be consulted for proper treatment.

: I wouldn't assume this is the cause. This is marginally low and seldom if ever the cause of such a pattern of symptoms. It the hemoglobin were down in the 5-6 range I would expect it might, but not at 12. I would look for another reason as more likely.

35-50: While these are the numbers, i would ask you to not concentrate on just one number but look at the entire picture.  If the teen is on the low side of these numbers, i would be looking at other lab values such as his hgb, ferritin, ua and making sure there is no evidence of any chronic blood loss (unusual in teen boys, unlike girls who menstruate monthly). These kids often do not intake enough iron.

What symptoms?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your symptoms are unlikely to be due to your hemoglobin/hematocrit.  It would require investigation to find the cause of your symptoms, which you did not describe.

Some ideas: If you are losing blood (monthly loss, loss from illness) or are a non-supplementing vegetarian, you'll lose the iron you need to make red cells before you become anemic. Serum ferritin fluctuates but if yours is low, it needs to be evaluated.

Why worry?: How do you FEEL? You may just have small red cells and your body is fully compensated -- my reds are pint-sized as well. You may even have a small dose of a thalassemia trait. You also know that reference ranges are arbitrarily set so that several percent of folks fall outside. What you describe is NEVER worrisome. Do ask your physician whether you have thal minor -- it's worth knowing

No: But I am concerned that you infarcted some of your spleen, especially as a young woman. Please try to find out why -- and if it was atherosclerosis, do everything you can to keep this at bay.
