what is the difference between bad leg edema and elephantiasis?

Similar: Bad leg swelling is otherwise called elephantiasis. People may have swelling of legs due to fluid overload, in diseases like heart failure, kidney failure, low Albumin etc in tropical countries, people can get elephantiasis due to filariasis.

i'm not sure if this is elephantiasis or not. my family has had a history of big legs. how can we get them to be normal?

Elephantiasis: There are familial disorders that cause lymphedema - most of them cause lower leg swelling that's evident early on in life, sometimes soon after birth.  There's a more well known cause of lymphedema (elephantiasis) which is from a nematode infection, so it's unlikely that all of your family members have this.  This could simply be a trait that runs in your family- like red hair or being tall.

what to do if i have bone marrow edema in a lot of parts of my foot/ankle (talus, etc.) i am wondering what is the difference between this and avascular necrosis?

Avascular necrosis: Is when the bone dies due to lack of blood, bone marrow edema is swelling within the confines of the bone. Did you have any kind of trauma to the bone ?

Many possibilities: COuld be venous insufficienct which is a back up in the veins that causes pooling of blood in leg

Unusual: Those symptoms are unusual at your age.  The worst thing we worry about with those symptoms is a blood clot in the pelvis or inferior vena cava.  There are many other potential causes also, though.  Therefore, you need to see your doctor to evaluate and treat the problem ASAP.

Yes: Elevate legs as high and as long as possible. Cool water and lubrication will help. It will feel better every day & be ok in 10 days.

Be seen : I would certainly recommend you be seen and thoroughly evaluated.  It can be a fluid retention issue of which there are multiple potential causes; or a venous outflow problem.  A detailed exam and appropriate studies will likely reveal the issue.

This : This is a very limited question , in terms of information
many things ought to be cosidered. The first is , if you have swelling , why? Swelling in the feet , could be due to many many causes that not necesarilly are due to arthritis or joints and this swelling might be the cause of the pain. If one determines the cause of pain so then diferent test could help to determine whether that swelling could be resolved and how. On the other hand m bone does not cause swelling , if the consistency is that of bone , so again imaging studies ought to be done to define why this is so.

: You likely have venous insufficiency or stasis in which blood pools in your legs whenever sitting or standing for long enough. Keeping your legs up as much as possible and when possible will reverse the tendency and compression stockings may help as well. Diuretics are also used sometimes, your doc would be in best position to discuss them in the context of your current treatment.
