Common: The incidence of incisional hernias is quite variable depending upon the operation (midline incisions have the highest risk) and the health of the patient.  Factors that increase the risk include obesity, smoking, wound infections, malnutrition, heavy lifting, etc.  Following a midline incision, hernia rates have been published as low as 5% and as high as 20% incidence.

Consult your surgeon: You should go back to your surgeon - get examined - let him recommend the course of treatment and let him advise regarding the hernia belt

Hernia and liquor : Alcohol does not affect hernia immediatly, but alcohol is very high in nonnutritious calories and can make u gain a lot of belly fat  and obesity which can make any hernia worse.
Do not drink alcohol after surgery because it may interact with your post op medications and anesthesisa medications that can stay in the body a few dayus after the suegery.

Walk walk walk: after mesh hernia repair you should start with walking.  Wait 6-8 weeks after repair for the hernia to heal.

No other alternative: Unfortunately, the only way to treat a hernia is to surgically repair it. However, not all hernias need to be repaired--we always balance the risk of the hernia vs. The risk of repair, which has to be individualized. Some people may find relief wearing an abdominal binder or truss, but these are only temporary maneuvers. Of course, losing weight (if obese) and avoiding heavy lifting help, as well.

Depends: It depends on what the goals of the operation are. I would consider the problem the hernia is causing, and the likelihood it will get worse vs. The risks of operation and likelihood of success. It is also important i consider there may be a variety if techniques to choose from, some more invasive that others. While age is a consideration, it is only one factor. Hope this helps!

Damage intestines: The risks of having an umbilical hernia are that intestines can become trapped inside (incarcerated), and their blood supply can then be cut off (strangulation).  That could cause necrosis (death) of that part of intestine, which could lead to a hole in the intestine wall.  This is very rare but is serious.

Usually untreated hernias just may cause some pain.

No: The only situation I am aware of to where this occurs is umbilical or belly button hernias in children. They usually close by age 4-5.

You can't truly: The only cure for an abdominal hernia is surgical repair.  One can wear an external support which supports the abdominal wall but this is an external support and doesn't repair the defect.
