Poor growth: Growth within normal range indicates by exam and graphing height measurements along the way.
If the growth chart and exam reveals too little growth or too much growth, lab and or pictures (X-rays, scans) may be done to rule out abnormal growths and reveal a disorder that is treatable i.e. deficiency of GH or gigantism from too much GH (growth hormone).  See your pedi MD for assessments if concerne

Stress and growth: Growth hormone is responsible for growth and repair.  The hormones produced by stress are catabolic.  So the first builds you up and the other breaks you down.  During stressful periods, the sleep cycles are also interrupted  and unfortunately growth hormone is mainly produced in stage 4 sleep, thus compounding the problem.   So stress does effect growth and repair of the body.

Several issues: Poor growth can reflect problems in 3 basic areas. Poor potential: if a kid is genetically destined to be small due to family pattern or genetic defect. Poor nutrition: good nutrition assures the body will have what it needs to grow while a lack will slow it. Poor health: medical conditions can lead to poor nutrient absorption, excessive energy loss, poor hormonal balance, etc. & poor sleep.

The practice is near-universal among male teens and very common among females. You learn about your body and mind in preparation for adult life, and you can stay comfortable ; able to do the other things you need to.

Not normal: Both calprotectin and ESR are measures of inflammation.   Since your child's doctor has already started some testing, I encourage you to continue the evaluation.  It sounds like your child has been quite ill, and I hope she improves soon.

Depends on these: These  tests depend on the normal ranges of your laboratory. To treat  Gluten sensitivty you would avoid all gluten. there are many gluten free  products  you can use to avoid wheat. It sounds like your physician feels it is better  for you not to take  in any wheat  products. Look for Gluten Free substitutes.

Inflammation: Sometimes the most frustrating thing about medical work ups is not hearing a DIAGNOSIS. Your child's labs and biopsy all point to inflammation - from what it's still hard to determine but patchy cryptitis is found in both Chron's disease and Ulcerative colitis. The age and the poor growth make me more concerned for Celiac disease. Keep your follow up appt with MD for advice on next step

IBD: Cryptitis is seen in inflammatory bowel disease, both Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis, but it also can be seen in other inflammatory conditions of the intestines. It is not a disease itself but a histologic manifestation of several different diseases.Calprotectin is a biochemical test for intestinal inflammation, including inflammatory bowel disease.
I hope he is being treated by a pediatric GI Dr.
