Probably better!: Running (and walking) is good exercise but swimming is even better as it provides more exercise to the arms as well as legs and does not put as much stress on your knee, hip and ankle joints as it is not weight-bearing.

Remember: They are just different forms of exercise.  Swimming tend to be a better total body workout and more easily tolerated joint wise(unless you have rotator cuff issues or shoulder arthritis).  While running is "harder" on the joints, it also is better at promoting bone density stability/increase.
