Allergies..: When you experience nasal allergies the mucus is collected in the upper respiratory tract and drains from your nose to the back of your throat sort to say. That is the clear mucus you are noticing.

Combination problem: I assume you have had a thorough history and physical with appropriate tests including lung function, chest xrays and CT of sinuses.
Many people with chronic cough tend to have a combination of 1-asthma, 2-post nasal drip from allergies and/or sinusitis and 3-silent gastroesophageal reflux.   All three must be managed.  Don't brush aside #3 even if you don't feel heartburn.

Mucus: I assume you don't smoke. Causes could be postnasal drip, GERD, laryngopharyngeal reflux,chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma. Discolored mucus signifies associated chronic infection of sinuses, bronchial tubes,lungs. I recommend an evaluation by a pulmonologist for diagnosis and treatment which would depend upon the cause. Appropriate tests will be ordered.

Probably a cold: Maybe an allergy. Allergy don't cause fevers or aches and pains. You might have swollen lymph nodes ("glands") in the neck with a cold. Allergies to outdoor environmental things like pollens are usually seasonal. Indoor things (dust) are all year round. Antihistamines are helpful as symptom reducers for allergies and are available OTC. Best for colds chicken soup.

Not unusual: It is not unusual to sometimes get a bit of blood in mucus when you cough forceful or clear your throat repeatedly. Stay hydrated to thin mucus and reduce the need to cough or clear throat as much. If you are getting a teaspoon or more of blood/ bloody mucus when you cough or clear your throat, you should see you primary doctor promptly.

is it normal to have a cough after using advair? also coughing up a small amount of mucus. only used twice and stopped use per dr request.

Cough: Some people have irritation in their throat from their inhaler and can cough immediately following its use. If you are using the advair diskus, (salmeterol and fluticasone) it is a more common problem as it is a powder inhaler. I think you need to have your doctor review your treatment but you should be fine on the long run with it, and rinse your mouth after you use it to avoid oral thrush.

See your doctor: Loss of appetite with a cough and blood stained nasal discharge could mean a simple viral infection or something more sinister. The blood could be from burst tiny blood vessels in the nose from blowing your nose excessively or after heavy coughing bouts. You need a proper workup by your doctor. You would probably need a CXR as well.

Respiratory issues: Difficulty breathing on exhalation with mucus production is commonly seen in asthma.  Difficulty breathing on inspiration with a cough is commonly seen with vocal cord dysfunction. Some people have both.  A physician can perform spirometry (lung function test) to assess and provide recommendations for a treatment plan.

Debris: You may have coughed up debris coming from the crypts or crevices of your tonsils. See your doctor for help.

Asthma: I'm suspicious that your persistant cough may be a form of asthma.  It does not sound like you are infected.  I would wonder if the cough wakes you up at night or if it gets worse with exercise.  If it continues you should see your physician.
