'to cut' biopsy: 'incisional biopsy' literally means to 'cut out some tissue' to get a good sample of a particular lesion (usually skin but can be any biopsy). An excisional biopsy is similiar but this refers to removing the whole lesion with normal tissue around it (as in a small dark mole removed). Biopsies are sent to a pathologist who 'reads' the slides under a microscope looking for abnormal cells/diseases.

~48hrs: Most basic pathology results from a biopsy should be available in ~48hrs. The tissue needs to fix in formalin for a particular amount of time (6hrs-overnight) then be processed, slides made and stained, then interpreted. Each of these steps takes time. Additional staining or deeper cuts for furthe evaluation/markers may add another day before the full results are back.

Less than a day: A clean incision should not hurt for more than a few hours. If the pain persists for more than a day, it would be prudent to contact your doctor.

One : One common area from where bone marrow biopsies are taken from is the iliac crest. The ilium is one of the bones in the pelvis and between the outer and inner harder or cortical portions of the bones there is softer, what we call cancellous bone from which the biopsy can be taken. If you feel the hard pelvic bone on your sides just below your abdomen, this is generally where this is taken from. In many cases this can be done percutaneously with a large bore needle rather than making a formal incision. Good luck!

i had an ultra sound guided biopsy about a month ago. the results were benign. i'm feeling a lump about an inch from the incision sight. is this norma?

Is it accompanied: by pain and redness?  If so, it could be an abscess.  If not, it is not unusual for a small blood collection(hematoma) to form after a biopsy, which can feel like a lump as it "organizes" or heals.  In any case, call your doc and let him/her know about it, they might want you to come in for an evaluation to make sure.

i had a biopsy two weeks ago and its still burning the incision points is red and very sensitive. its burns like in a way i hav eto lay down. i cannot even wear a bra?

Follow up visit: Could be an infection. Follow up with the Dr that did the Biopsy, they will be able to examine the area and identify the cause of your discomfort as well as treat it.

Pain: Probably not a problem.  Increased activity likely causing pain, but if red swollen or draining get checked

7-10 days: Most surgical incisions heal in 7-10 days or even sooner. Though the incision site and the scar continue to mature for many months.

salivary gland biopsy. dr. made an incision no salivary glands.  dr said may have atrophied  did 2nd incision & found glands. is it consistnt sjogrens?

A normal occurrence: I assume it was a lip biopsy. The initial biopsy just had no glands in it. Glands are scattered in the lip and it is not unusual for a biopsy to not contain any glands. They did not atrophy. That is nonsense.

i just had a breast  biopsy 2 weeks ago and not on the side of the nipple where the incision iis but the opposite side i'm having a pain i'd this norm?

It could be referred: Pain. When the nerves are cut during the biopsy , it may cause referred pain on the other side.. Follow up with your gyn for reassurance. Take care!
