Not exactly...: The slumber guard is a thermoplastic mandibular advancement device that the snorer heats and then molds to provide a custom fit, in order to hold the snorer's lower jaw in a forward extended position.

This moves the base of the tongue away from the back of the airway and the soft palate, removing the obstruction and restoring snore-free breathing.

A deterrent: They will prevent all but the most determined from causing mischief.  There is a tremendous difference in their training and I have seen a few that don't look formidable at all.

Nutrition & exercise: Healthy eating & regular exercise are key to good health & as well as healthy bones. Impact exercise (as opposed to swimming or cycling) is more important for bones to get & stay strong. Get plenty of calcium from your diet. We recommend avoiding sunlight to minimize skin cancer but we get our vitamin d (necessary for healthy bones) from sunlight. So consider taking vitamin d supplement instead.

Mouth guards.: Bite guards are devices that protect the teeth or relive TMJ symptoms. It can be used for people who grind their teeth, for patients with chronic headaches and for protecting expensive restorations such as porcelain laminates while you sleep. Other names are mouth guard, bruxism guard and oral orthotic.

how long does it usually take for bite guards to work?

Not well: Bite guards do only one thing. They are a piece of plastic that when worn at night, keeps you from grinding tooth against tooth. You will still grind and clench, which will still cause TMJ issues like the crackling noise you mentioned before, jaw pain and often, headaches. The only way to fix the problem and have something "work", is to see a dentist with TMJ expertise. They will advise you best.

any harmful effects to placing peroxyl in a grind guard?

Depends: How well does the guard fit?  Why are you doing it?

The guard must fit well. But:

problems:  peroxyl is no longer in gel form only liquid, so it would be hard to place it in your guard and then the guard on your teeth, without spilling the peroxyl. (that won't work)

if you want to whiten your teeth, see your dentist who can evaluate the guard fit and dispense proper whitening gel.

i am so sorry to hear about the trouble you are having.
However, there are many reasons for the use of a bite guard, accordingly, there are different designs which are employed.
Since, it is impossible for anyone to actually assess your situation without a proper physical examination, the only thing that i can recommend is that you go back to your dentist or prosthodontist.

A little: Depends on how strenuous the exercise is. If your heart rate is not elevated and you are not building muscle than unlikely.

Nope: Sounds pretty good.  Low-ish heart rates are normal when you are younger.  They are not a problem unless you are having symptoms like lightheadedness or fainting .
