Not well: Bite guards do only one thing. They are a piece of plastic that when worn at night, keeps you from grinding tooth against tooth. You will still grind and clench, which will still cause TMJ issues like the crackling noise you mentioned before, jaw pain and often, headaches. The only way to fix the problem and have something "work", is to see a dentist with TMJ expertise. They will advise you best.

Commitment: Depends on your commitment. Bite guards do not "fix" the cause of your joint issues, only mask many of the symptoms. To be effective the bite guard should be worn as much as possible (24h/day of you can) until the symptoms ease off, then time in appliance can be reduced. The less you wear it initially, the less effective it is.
