Open dialog: Try to enter into a conversation with them and ask how things are going.  People often need to share their feelings and how they are doing.  Use open ended questions.  Ask "how are you feeling"   "don't you seem to notice a lot of depressed people these day?" and such, to lead you into having them open up to you.  Then be supportive and maybe suggest they see a mental health professional.  B suppo.

Childhood depression: First, have him see fis doctor to be screened.  Usually at this age, just some counseling and extra attention from the family are all that is needed.  Rarely, medications may be prescribed, but usually counseling is all that is needed.

Exercise and Engage: Assess how serious her depressed mood is (thoughts of suicide, not eating or sleeping well?) take her to her doctor to evaluate for thyroid, stroke, anemia, nutrient deficit, and make a clear safety plan to monitor her progress.  She needs daily hugs & smiles, physical exercise, music and positive, unstressed social time with family & friends.  Consider: talk therapy, biofeedback, meds.

Please clarify your: your question. What exams did your son fail? Medical exams? Or is he having trouble in school? If he is having trouble in school, ask for the school psychologist to do a full evaluation or get a neuropsychological evaluation from an outside provider. They will then come up with a plan to help him with his school work.
