Exercise and Engage: Assess how serious her depressed mood is (thoughts of suicide, not eating or sleeping well?) take her to her doctor to evaluate for thyroid, stroke, anemia, nutrient deficit, and make a clear safety plan to monitor her progress. She needs daily hugs & smiles, physical exercise, music and positive, unstressed social time with family & friends. Consider: talk therapy, biofeedback, meds.

ENCOURAGE HELP!!: Encourage your mom to seek help. Offer to go with her. Go to her own doctor first may be easier to start there. Keep talking and listening. Give her literature on depression so she knows that she is not alone.
