Make sure to let the: Dentist or his/her staff know in advance so that they can help you through this.  When acutely anxious breath in slowly ; deeply through your nostrils. Fill your lungs with air (but not to the point of discomfort). Hold for a count of five then slowly begin to exhale through an open mouth. Repeat at least 12 times, longer if you need to. Acupuncture beforehand is quite effective.

Yes: But, keep in mind that the half life of valium is about 10 hours, which means if you take it an hour before going to the dentist you likely will still feel the effects after the procedure.  You also want to be careful about combing xanax (alprazolam) with pain medication the dentist might give you.  The combination could impair your driving ability and other motor skills.
