Depends needs exam: You could have something as simple as a muscle contusion, 
but you need to be checked for possible signs of phlebitis or
circulation problems. If there is trauma it is probably less serious. But a warm swollen calf without injury could be indicative of a clot and needs immediate treatment.

The area of which you are referring to, are the 2 muscles that make up the posterior of the lower leg. The larger gastocnemious muscle and the smaller soleus muscle together are referred to as the calf muscle. Swelling could be due to trauma or any number of origins. They attach to the achilles heel tendon.

Depends: Ice is good on acute injuries to decrease the inflammation, like when an athlete sprains an ankle.  Heat promotes blood flow to the area in order to help healing.  Depending on the cause of your calf swelling will dictate which would be more helpful.  Many times if both calfs are swelling it can be from decreased venous return and therefore leg elevation, and compressive stockings can help.

See your doctor soon: One of the worst things we worry about with one-sided calf or leg swelling out of the blue is a blood clot.  If you haven't had any trauma recently or think you've pulled a muscle, you should see your doctor.   Other things include a ruptured baker's cyst (a fluid filled sac behind the knee), or a ruptured head of one of the calf muscles.  Best of luck and take care.

The calf muscles can become strained or torn causing pain and swelling in the injured calf muscle.

Usually an emergency: Calf-swelling with pain is usually an emergency because doctors want to evaluate the patient to see if there is a blood clot in the leg. Such a clot can break off a chunk, flow to the lungs, and be fatal. There are other causes of leg pain and swelling, but always rule out the potentially lethal ones first. One should tell doctors about any surgeries, injuries, medications, prolonged sitting, etc.
