Yes, calf X's knee: The calf muscles cross the back of the knee as they originate from the back of the thigh bone next to the knee capsule. When the knee hyperextends, the back of the knee often over stretches. This can cause injury to your knee that includes the posterior capsule and juxtaposed calf muscles. The calf muscles can become strained or torn causing pain and swelling in the injured calf muscle.

Calf swelling: When you hyperextended your knee...Bent it backwards...You most likely stretched or even partially tore your gastrocnemius muscle/tendo. This attaches above the knee. This muscle, along with the soleus, make up the calf muscle.
