Usually an emergency: Calf-swelling with pain is usually an emergency because doctors want to evaluate the patient to see if there is a blood clot in the leg. Such a clot can break off a chunk, flow to the lungs, and be fatal. There are other causes of leg pain and swelling, but always rule out the potentially lethal ones first. One should tell doctors about any surgeries, injuries, medications, prolonged sitting, etc.
