It happens: If the kid can swallow fluids without choking the foreign material made it into the stomach. It will travel through the system over the next 3-5 days with no problems. I wouldn't bother looking for it although it may show up easily. If the kid is choking with all fluids have it seen.

Likely not: The bag is not that easily digested but a small one may well pass through without causing any obstruction. Need to take him to the ER if he starts vomiting and complains of severe abdominal cramps.

Swallowing candy: If you are not having any difficulty swallowing and can drink liquids and eat food normally after swallowing the hard candy, the candy should gradually disintegrate. If you develop abdominal pain, you should be further evaluated.

Brush After Sugars: It is important to brush, or at least rinse with water, after eating sweets. Then most of the sugar & food particles are washed away & do not fead billions of bacteria that normally live in the mouth. While not known to be harmful, chewing gum should be spit out & not swallowed. Chewing gum while laying down can be dangerous if it goes to the back of throat & is inhaled into the lungs or windpipe.

Discuss: The intent of radioiodine is to destroy all your thyroid cells. It is secreted in the urine but also in the saliva. In atleast one randomized blinded study (nakada k, et al), the incidence of salivary gland damage was higher if candy was given earlier than 24 hours after treatment. Discuss this important issue with your doctor.

i swallowed plastic from a candy cane and it hurts to swallow and drink. will the doctor be able to get it out without open surgery ?

Doubt they would try: It is not unusual for foreign material to scrape or irritate the swallowing apparatus during ingestion. Most of these pass to the stomach and eventually through the gut without problems. Ingesting some stewed okra can drag &amp; encapsulate any residual into the stomach/gut. If needed they could look at your esophagus with a scope, under sedation, but I doubt they would ever open you for this.
