Discuss: The intent of radioiodine is to destroy all your thyroid cells. It is secreted in the urine but also in the saliva. In atleast one randomized blinded study (nakada k, et al), the incidence of salivary gland damage was higher if candy was given earlier than 24 hours after treatment. Discuss this important issue with your doctor.

Yes: By stimulating your salivary glands, it minimizes the chance of the iodine concentrating there, which can cause dry mouth.
