could a doppler ultrasound damage leg?

Not unless....: Unless the sonographer is really strong and was pushing on the leg really hard there is no way a doppler sono can cause the leg harm. Back in the early days of ultrasound research after wwii, navy surplus sonar transducers were used to image fish. They were so powerful that fish were killed. This is not an issue with diagnostic equipment.

went in for an ultrasound on leg to check for clots, technician checked inside of leg but not the outside?

Accepted Answer

If you: are referring to the thigh region, for a DVT study, the vein that needs to be imaged is the femoral vein, which runs towards the inside of the thigh. There is no need to image the outside of the leg, because there are no anatomic "deep" veins there.  The deep veins are the important veins to check for clots, because those are the ones that can lead to PE.

Questions: Ask what you asked here. You should know why you are sent to see the consultant and after the consultant does your history and exam, ask what the consultant thinks and why.  If testing is needed ask why and what the possibilities are as well. Ask about your treatment if treatment is needed. An informed patient can help themselves better than an uninformed one.

may i keep my stockings on during leg ultrasound?

Most likely not: The ultrasound probe needs to be in connection to your skin, and a gel is placed on the skin to improve the conduction through the skin- if your stockings cover the area that they need to ultrasound you will have to take them off.  If they are only looking at your thigh it shouldn’t be a problem!

is it possible to detect a tumor via a doppler ultrasound in the leg?

Yes: most  of the lesions in the leg are primary sarcomas. There are very few metastatic lesions other than those spreading to groin nodes.  Sarcomas grow as masses and can easily be palpated.  If the lesion is deep to skin and begins growing, it spreads the overlying tissue over it so that the margins of the growing lesion may not be clear.  Here a Doppler should easily identity its true margins.

does ultrasound check all the veins and branches in the leg or just the most common veins where problems arise?

Large deep ones: The ultrasound for clot checks the big/ deep veins in the legs not all the veins.  And clots seen below the level of the knee in the deep veins not usually associated with significant problems and are not usually treated with blood thinners. Hope this helps.  Best of luck.  Dr R

Fetal ultrasound: All fetal measurements are compared to an "average" for each component.  The measurements of individual fetal parameters are thus variable, and dependent on multiple factors influencing fetal growth.  The "head and leg" measurements are normal for dates, and should produce no adverse concerns.

last week i had 2 ultrasounds and 3 ddimers. dr says no clot. leg still hurts and i'm worried they missed the clot. what should i do?

Leg pain : It sounds like you had extensive testing done and of all the results showed no clock in the likelihood would be much less than 1% of a clot existing. Other causes of leg pain could include venous insufficiency, muscle strain, etc... If the pain persists however i would recommend you seen a vascular surgeon as they are the experts in this area.

can ultrasound be used to detect nerve impingement/entrapped nerve calf? is there any type of imaging that can detect a pinched nerve in the leg?

Nerve conduction: tests are quite good. MRI is likely to also be effective.

venous insufficency ultrasound today with a quick inflate cuff. the 2 times they used cuff on my leg i got really lightheaded for a minute. cause?

Accepted Answer

Lightheaded: Cuff pressure can technically reduce blood flow back to the heart temporarily which could theoretically reduce cardiac filling and therefore cardiac output, which could temporarily reduce blood flow to the brain, making you feel lightheaded. Possible, but unlikely. Other causes of lightheadedness include infection, anemia, response to pain, blood sugar problems or other. See a doctor.
