i'm diabetic. today my fasting glucose level was 74, but i didn't have hypoglycemia symptoms, so is it considered hypo or normal? & if it was hypo why i didn't feel the hypo symptoms?

: Many will not have symptoms of hypoglycemia until the level drops down below 60 or 50. When managing your diabetes we try to keep the level away from any extremes, but I consider 70-100 my "normal" target.

It's all one: Disorder; only the name changes as your sugar gets higher. The health risks don't change as the name changes, you're at the same risk right from the beginning - that's why it's important not to wait but begin diet, exercise, weight loss and education now. Unlikely: If both HbA1c and fasting glucose are normal you are most likely fine.  Occasionally people are having much higher sugars AFTER they eat (measured 2 hours) and are diabetic without knowing it.  This would have been reflected in the A1c though which is why I think you're probably fine!

my father fasting glucose level is 115. does this mean he is pre diabetic? what to do?

: He should have another fasting glucose done with HbA1C at the same time. If glucose is still btwn 100-125 &amp; HbA1C is btwn 5.7-6.4 then he is prediabetic. However, if HbA1c is 6.5 or higher then he is diabetic, not prediabetic. To tackle prediabetic condition your father needs to lower total calorie intake at least 20% and the reduction is mainly from carbohydrate source + exercise 30 mins/day.

for a non-diabetic patient whose normal fasting glucose is 90mg/dl, how much spike in fasting glucose is normal during an acute vertiginous migraine attack? is a 60mg/dl elevation to a fasting glucose level of 150mg/dl normal and acceptable?

: During an acute vertiginous migraine attack, a spike in fasting glucose levels is not typically observed. In fact, a study conducted by the American Diabetes Association found that there was no significant difference in fasting glucose levels between migraine sufferers and non-migraine sufferers. Therefore, a 60mg/dl elevation to a fasting glucose level of 150mg/dl is not considered acceptable.

my fasting glucose level is 86 (70-110) and fasting insulin level is 0.96 (1-25). i use metformin already for pcos. do i have diabetes now? thanks.

Insulin Resistance: PCOS is an early sign of insulin resistance. The change should be in your lifestyle. Metformin is only a temporary fix. Change your lifestyle with good nutrition(plants) and exercise and the PCOS will resolve. You do not have diabetes now but you are at risk due to history of PCOS. Further vitamin B12 is low with metformin use and other problems ensue. So take care of lifestyle and it will change.

: A fasting glucose level of 125 mg/dL may indicate impaired glucose tolerance or pre-diabetes. HOMA (Homeostatic Model Assessment) is a method used to assess insulin resistance and beta-cell function. A HOMA score of less than 2 indicates normal insulin sensitivity, while a score greater than 2 suggests insulin resistance. Your HOMA score of 0.98 indicates normal insulin sensitivity.

Still normal: Fasting glucose below 100 is normal. You may improve your glucose tolerance through exercise and weight loss. Of the two regular aerobic exercise is more important.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

could i have diabetes if my fasting glucose is sometimes around 6.6  and daytime glucose levels are normal?

Accepted Answer

Impaired glucose tol: A fasting glucose over 7 mmol/l on two occasions would be considered diabetes.  A level of 6.6 would be impaired glucose tolerance.  I would get a hba1c, if above 6.5, you have diabetes.  In any event, a no concentrated sweets diet is in order, and if you are overweight, you must lose weight.  Do regular exercise.
