see below: Drainage of the abscess is the primary treatment.  Antibiotic treatment is secondary to treat the surrounding soft tissue infection.  This will usually start improving a few days after starting the antibiotic if the abscess has been adequately drained.

i was prescribed cleocin (clindamycin phosphate) for my toothache but my x-ray didn't show i had an abscess . do i still have to take it?

Infection can exist: In the absence of an overt abscess.  You probably need the antimicrobial.  Are you penicillin allergic? Is not, there are probably better drugs to use.

after iv antibiotics yesterday, tooth abscess swelling gotten worse. should i go back to the er? i'm taking cleocin (clindamycin phosphate) hcl 300mg 3x daily for 7 days.

Probably OK, but...: Antibiotics don't work overnight, and it's not unusual for symptoms to get worse for a day or two. Typically I would not expect much improvement until 2-3 days. But to be safe, phone the ER or your doctor. If the swelling is severe, pain increasing, or fever, they might want to recheck things in person.

is clindamycin stronger than amoxicillin, at equal doses, to temporarily treat a periodontal abscess?

Not stronger,: different.  They tend to cover different bacteria. Dentists and oral surgeons may prefer clindamycin for the organisms in the mouth. Better coverage than say amoxicillin. Sometimes it may be only a personal preference.

the dentist prescribed clindamycin 300mg (no penicillin because of penicillin allergy) twice a day for 8 days for a tooth abscess. 
do you think it is a very low dosage, wrong to be taken in 2 doses only? would it be effective as prescribed?

Antibiotics: Please do not concern yourself with "milligrams". Each medication needs a different dose. As long as the amount of medication in your bloodstream is high enough over a 24 period to be effective, the dosage and frequency is irrelevant. Your dentist has deemed this dosage appropriate and is based on his/her experience and training.

eyelid abscess with cellulitis for one week. dr rx smz-tmp ds and clindamycin 4 days ago. was ok until bactrim dose today and now very dizzy & nausea.

Bactrim side-effect: Bactrim (TMP/SMX) can cause neurologic side effects - so I would place the blame there. It's extremely important though to notify your doctor - the one who prescribed those antibiotics. Hopefully your infection is well treated enough where you can stop everything. There are plenty of other agents that could be used to fight an infection like that. Stopping before things get worse is important.

Wound abscess: What you are expressing is likely a mixture of fat cell necrosis, some pus, and serous exudate;  it must be extruded and cleaned out; lumpy nature likely indicates small collections within this wound; these should be cleaned out as well; it is time for the surgeon to examine this again; it can be probed, irrigated, and wicked again; a repeat culture is indicated, also. Please call your doc

NO: It cannot. However, it the bacteria is resistant to it, then the infection is getting worse; this could cause your abscess to throb.

Can't advise: Can't advise you to medicate yourself. The tooth needs to be treated by a dentist anyway, and the antibiotics won't fix the problem, just mask the symptoms. Call a local dentist who will prescribe what is best for your situation. The abscess will only get worse without care.

i was prescribed amoxicillin and clindamycin by 2 different dentist for an abcess. can i take the clindamycin after already taking amox same day?

One or the other: Usually, a person takes one or the other antibiotic for a dental abscess. One can ask the dentist to see if there was a reason to take both antibiotics instead of one or the other... and follow the dentist's instructions.
