Accepted Answer

Isolated low: HDL, by itself, does not mean much, if you have no other risk factors.  Vigorous exercise is the only way of raising it.  There is no medication that will do it.  If you have other risk factors, you should ask your doctor to see if your LDL needs attention.

: This lipid profile is excellent! There is nothing to worry about and in large population studies with total cholesterol lower than 150, heart disease is almost non existent. If your LDL cholesterol is low, there is not much need to have a high HDL cholesterol either. In very simple terms, think about HDL as a vehicle to remove/counteract LDL.

my ldl cholesterol was 5.2 mmol/l (upper bound was 5.2 mmol/l as well).  yet i actually have a very low body fat. should i worry about this at all?

HDL?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your LDL is higher than desired, but if your HDL is also high that may protect you. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

Blood LDL Level: LDL is "low density lipoprotein", a particle that carries cholesterol in the blood. Increased LDL is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and premature death. Lowering LDL can reduce this risk. LDL levels are estimated by cholesterol (LDL-C). Because the cholesterol carried in LDL particles is highly variable many doctors prefer to use LDL particle number (LDL-P) to manage LDL related risk

Not really: Very low LDL cholesterol levels (less than 40) can occur genetically (hypobetalipoproteinemia), in which case such low values are present from birth, or in response to medical therapies. In both settings individuals have normal development, sexual function, and show no specific adverse effects. Low levels are sometimes noted due to severe illness (cancer, etc), but that is a different issue.

Not good!: For some reason, your results are outside the healthy range in each measure. You might find a good nutritionist who could help you find a diet plan - but a good physician is also needed. You are young and it strikes me as good since you have time to reshape your habits, but bad that it is so out of range already. Don't worry, but do take it seriously - as they say - like a heart attack!

These go together: The key to low LDL is maintaining normal body weight with calorie restriction and daily exercise. Fruits and vegetable are low in calories and will lower your ldl. If you have diabetes, keeping blood sugar in check will help greatly. Avoid animal fats, butter, whole milk and soft cheeses which are caloric. Use nonfat milk and yogurt, whole grains, legumes, nuts, & olive oil in small amts.

i have a high lpa. have you heard if using low does estrogen to lower this? my cholesterol is 188 and i have great hdl and ldl

Lipoprotein (a),: as you know, is a lipoprotein subclass. It seems to be an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic disease. The only drug currently recommended for elevated Lp(a) is niacin. The effect of estrogen on Lp(a) is unclear: there is some evidence that ERT is associated with lower Lp(a) levels, but whether risk is lowered is questionable. Would not take ERT for this purpose alone. Best wishes.
