Inflammation: Sedimentation rate is a reflection of inflammation in the body.  Inflammation in the heart is part of myocardial infarction.  The inflammatory cells local to the inflammation signal back to the liver to increase inflammatory proteins.  These proteins result in the increased sedimentation rate.

i have a swollen cervical lymph node for 2+ months and night sweats, cbc came back normal, esr elevated.  what would your next diagnostic tests be?

Full medical workup: and a small biopsy of the cervical node ( or removal for study ). I would suggest a comprehensive medical exam, metabolic profile and repeat sed rate.

for a 75 years old lady crp is mildly elevated (10.3 mg/l) but esr is within range (22 mm/1st hr). what does this mean? is it a cause of concern?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, an isolated finding of mildly elevated CRP is not a cause for concern.     Wish you good health!

hello,had my blood test done today. everything fine, but i am confused with one thing. crp level is within the range, but esr is elevated (29). what does it mean? i feel good, all other tests fine, no leucocytosis etc. please help?

How high?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, CRP and ESR are different tests and one can be elevated while the other is not. It would have helped had you provided the actual results.

No: Lab data removed from the clinical picture have little meaning.  A negative test has relatively little relevance.  The ESR is a non-specific measure of intravascular inflammation, as is the CRP but for differing reasons.  You should discuss this with your treating doctor, or ask for a rheumatology consultation. i have autoimmune hepatitis, ast is  28 and alt is elevated 66. my crp is 0.1 and my esr is 2. does this mean inflammation is not the cause?

Trending up or down?: Some questions to put your concern ; lab results in context: 1) how long have you had autoimmune hepatitis?  2) what treatment are you taking ; have your medications changed recently?  3) alcohol intake (should be minimal)?  3) supplements or steroid use?  4) are your transaminases trending up or down (a useful question if CRP ; ESR are low)?  4) risks for other kinds of hepatitis (viral, etc.)?

Not much: It is a non specific test which means it can increase in all kinds of ailments such as chronic infections(TB for example and in Chronic arthritis) and in many different Cancers. So it is not useful test for Breast Cancer....pure waste of money!

esr 41 , + for maxilla bone biopsy bacterias , on iv picc line antibiotics and white count trending up and esr elevated again , sinus feels irritated back of nose cheek and now eye is swollen, pre molar feels off -sinus or tooth?

: The elevated ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and white blood cell count, along with the presence of bacteria in a maxilla bone biopsy, suggest an active infection. The irritation in the sinuses and back of the nose and cheek, as well as the swollen eye, are also indicative of sinus inflammation. It could also be related to a dental issue spreading from the premolar.
