Nothing: Elevated hemidiaphragm is not threatening.  There is no specific treatment.  Causes can include a phrenic nerve palsy, organomegally (enlarged organs e.G large spleen), post operative (from damage to the phrenic nerve).

is tenting of left hemidiaphragm the same as elevated diaphragm? i've been told i have tenting but wasn't explained what this means. recently diagnosed with mals syndrome, nutcracker syndrome, may thurner, and possibly thoracic outlet syndrome?

: No, diaphragm tenting is different from elevated diaphragm. Tenting means peaked or tented appearance of a hemidiaphragm which can occur in the setting of lobar collapse or after a partial lung resection (lobectomy) or it can be a normal variation in some people, i.e. you are born with that (a congenital condition).

Lung base unexpanded: The diaphragm is a thin membrane like muscle which stretches downward to expand the lungs. when it relaxes it moves upward and lungs compress.  sometimes one side of the diaphragm may remain elevated for various reasons.  The basal portions of the lungs is the base, or bottom portion.  When the diaphragm is high, the normal tissue crowds together and appears thicker. It is not necessarily abnormal

: The lateral sulcus is a space between the diaphragm and the chest wall. If your diaphragm and lateral sulcus (singular version-there is one on both sides) are unremarkable, it means they appear normal in whatever study you had done. See the doctor who ordered the test for the interpretation of the results since they know you best. Good luck to you!

Accepted Answer

Many possible causes: A paralyzed diaphragm- or more correctly a paralyzed half or hemi-diaphragm is the inability to move the diaphragm down on one side which is necessary to draw air into that lung. If the diaphragm is not moving , that lung is not working. Viral infections, trauma, cancer, auto-immune diseases and many, many  other causes are possible. A board certified pulmonary specialist should be consulted.

what happens if your diaphragm is half paralyzed? does it mean that you cannot breathe on your own?

Accepted Answer

Difficulty breathing: Although the diaphragm is one organ, both sides act almost independently, but they need each other for perfect breathing.  A nerve on each side of the heart makes the diaphragm move.  If that nerve is injured, that particular side of the diaphragm is paralyzed, making breathing difficult.  This may be fixed by a surgery called diaphragm plication, performed by a thoracic surgeon.

: The words describe some normal findings on an x-ray. Radiologists get fussed at if they just say "normal" so they add some wording to be clear that they looked at those sites where problems might be found.

: This means you have something in the right lung in the top part. You should see a lung doctor to find out the best way to diagnose whatever it is. You may need a biopsy to find out what the densities represent. Good luck to you!

Phrenic Nerve injury: The phrenic nerve supplies movement to the diaphragm for breathing. Although recovery can be achieved with time, a younger age appears to have better recovery. Muscle plication can improve breathing function, but not fix muscle dysfunction.  Electrical stimulation will improve muscle function, but can have limited lifespan with failure.  Nerve graft and exploration are other treatment  options.
