i just had an echo done and it found ascending aorta dilated 4.77cm. what does this mean? is it dangerous? mild concentric left ventricular hypertrophy. normal diventricular systole function. la volume index is 22.4 cm3/m2?

Accepted Answer

: There is no danger at this time; however, you need follow-up echo every 6 months for any change. The aneurysm needs to be fixed when it is bigger than 5.5 cm or the size increase at or above 0.5 cm/year. Blood pressure should be kept below 120/80. Good luck.

A few: Hypertension , atherosclerosis , or genetics. Usually treating risk factors are enough along with surveilence

Ectasia: Ectasia is dilation or distension of a blood vessel.

Not to Worry: The aorta is the largest artery. It is the tube that carries blood from the heart and sends  branches to the rest of the body. If that tube is a little wider than usual (perhaps related to high blood pressure), it is ectatic. If the widening increases, it is said to be aneurysmal. About one in 5 will progress like this according to one study. Ectasia is not a problem in and of itself.

How dilated?: Depends on how dilated the aorta is. If you are talking about the infra-renal aorta, than anything above 5cm is worrisome in men and >4.5cm in women. If you are talking about the thoracic aorta than anything greater than 6cm is worrisome. What are we worried about? Rupture.

Sibley Heart Center: Sibley Heart Center (with Emory University) has an excellent reputation. I'm not from the area and don't know if they have any special center for connective tissue disorders (like Loeys-Dietz, Marfan or Ehlers-Danlos), but that would be a good place to start. Medical treatment and follow-up may be sufficient if the dilatation is not severe. Good luck.

Dilated aorta: Generally dilated aorta is without symptoms unless its acute dilation. There could be increased abdominal pressure with defecation but have never heard of aortic symptoms being triggered by same. Would need lots more history and physical to try and figure out why post poopal pain is present.

can i safely participate in martial arts with a dilated ascending aorta of 4.2 cm?

Need vascular eval: You need to follow-up with a vascular surgeon and have your BP followed as well as cholesterol , stop smoking if you do, etc. and generally get routine follow-up visits.  Increased activity, like those in martial arts, may rise your BP, so it would be a question, that the Vascular Dr. who knows you best and treats you currently, would be able to tell you including exactly what activities 4U.
