i had a complete pelvic ultrasound yesterday... the tech asked me if i had a tampon in. i didn't. what would look like a tampon on an ultrasound?

Accepted Answer

Was it: transvaginal or transabdominal ?  If the former, possibly some difficulty inserting the probe.  If the latter, possibly air in the vagina.  Or, it could simply be a standard question.

Probable error: Since it is not likely that the patency of a Fallopian tube can be determined by a sonographic exam, it seems probable that  "they made an error" or that you were simply misinformed . A hysterosalpingogram (not a pelvic ultrasound)  is the usual XRay test that can reveal that your tubes were or "were not tied".

Probably WNL results: If these sonographic measurements were obtained by a skilled certified Gyn sonographer, they are probably considered within normal limits (WNL) or in the upper limits of normal for a woman who is 61 and postmenopausal. What is missing and much more important is the measurements of the "thickness of the endometrium".

Yes to a degree: Ultrasound is commonly used to classify Cysts in the Ovary. This reflects the risk of a cyst being benign versus Cancerous. The size of the cyst and whether it it has any solid components in addition to fluid increases the risk of it being cancerous. Your gynecologist should guide you further.

: At your age and the radiologist's conclusion is bilateral ovarian cysts so those cysts are considered benign cysts.

: For whatever reasons it is atechnically suboptimal scan and needs repeating- depending on the reason it was ordered

If it is transvaginal, a cylindrical probe with gel will be inserted internally. The transducer sends out sound waves, which bounce off the tissues inside your body. The transducer also captures the waves that bounce back. The ultrasound machine creates images from the sound waves.
