misdiagnosis with breast ultrasound? is it possible to have differing results from an ultrasound and a mammogram? in my case, the mammogram didn't show anything but an ultrasound did. which method is usually more reliable and how does this happen?

Yes, : Yes, results from an ultrasound can differ from the findings on a mammogram. Each imaging modality has its own strengths and weaknesses. The resolution of mammography is far superior to that of ultrasound. Mammography can detect tiny microcalcifications that could never be detected on ultrasound. Ultrasound is excellent at detecting cysts and can be used to evaluate blood flow in the area of interest. Many lesions often appear very subtle on a particular imaging study, but can be much more obvious on a different imaging modality. For this reason, it is extremely important for the radiologist to compare the images obtained in both studies. Ultrasound and mammography are complementary studies that should be used together to arive at the most likely diagnosis. The most reliable result is the one obtained after completing all imaging studies and analyzing the findings together in order to achieve the most likely diagnosis.

Nothing unless they: Unless the lymph glands are getting bigger, you do not need to do anything further. if the lymph nodes are getting bigger, then you need to go see your doctor again.

Probably ok: Cyst are common in the breasts. They often cause tenderness before your period. Make sure you follow up in six months as recommended. If your doctor was more worried they would have scheduled more imaging or a biopsy.

can see mark was done different area . should i worry or would u/s show lump i went about ?

: When you have breast ultrasound done, it will detect the lump if you have it, does not matter where the mark is.

Possible biopsy: Ultrasound and even mammo unless re examined by MRI can miss up  to 20% of lesions.  When a surgeon feels a solitary well defined lump, if it is ballotable meaning possible fluid present then an aspiration is performed.  If questionable, an FNA follows.  If signs of malignancy present such as skin retraction then an excisional biopsy should be performed in an ambulatory facility.

Not too long: A breast ultrasound usually only takes between 20-40 minutes, but is somewhat operator dependent.  An experienced ultrasonographer can be fairly rapid.  However it is more important for them to be thorough and experienced rather than quick.

Breast : Breast ultrasound is useful to further characterize breast lesions. Ultrasound it is excellent for detecting in characterizing cysts (well circumscribed fluid pockets). Ultrasound can also be used determine if the lesion could represent a benign fibroadenoma. Ultrasound can also be used to evaluate for enlarged lymph nodes in the armpits and around the breasts. It can also be used two evaluate if there are large vessels associated with a mass.

Jelly; probe: Ultrasound operator places some aqueous jelly on the breast ; then scans using ultrasound probe, about size of a cany bar. Probe is moved back ; forth whilst operator watches a video screen. Jelly is wiped off at end of study. Operator is either a dr/radiologist, dr/gynecologist (if trained) or an ultrasound technician ; study is reviewed by a dr.
