Yes, it's "real low": For best effects you want 25-hydroxy vitamin d to be at least 50 ng/ml.  Range of normal is 30-74 ng/ml.  So you can see how your 18 compares to those values.  Your doctor will likely want to replace vit d -- can use 10, 000iu/day for several months and then re-test.  Good luck!

Ghee: As far as I can gather by looking at a number of articles there appears to be no vitamin D in ghee. Vitamin D is inexpensive over the counter and 1000 or 2000 a day will do no harm.
That said, independent of vitamin D, ghee might be a good treat from time to time.

Vit D: it should be enough. some sun exposure will be good. make sure you protect yourself with sunscreen. usually 10-20 min a day is good enough. take mild and milk products. some of them are fortified with Vit D. Follow up with doctor as excess of Vit d supplementation  can cause toxicity.

You can: for few weeks, especially if you are overweight / obese, but keep the follow up with your doctor. The usual dose for the vit D deficiency is 1500 - 2000 iu / day for adults. Lifestyle changes, diet, exercise and other factors influence our metabolism, so it is more important to concentrate on healthy lifestyle, good luck

How low?: Vitamin D deficiency interferes with bone and bones become soft if vitamin D and calcium are deficient. Loss of bone calcium gets exaggerated around menopause. You may take what your doctor prescribed or you may take 3000-4000 units of vitamin D3 daily.

To treat vitamin D deficiency: 50 000 IU vitamin D2  (Ergocalciferol in the US) once a week for 8 - 12 wks often attains a 25(OH)D concentration of ?75 nmol/L (30 ng/ml). To maintain vitamin D sufficiency,  I usually recommend 50 000 IU vitamin D2 (or its equivalent in daily Vitamin D3- in US- Cholecalciferol) every 2- 4 wks will sustain Vitamin D concentrations above 75 nmol/L.
