i recieved brain ct scan results they say incomplete fat suppression can some one please explain this. thanks for your reply?

Technical finding: I am going to assume that you had an MRI rather than ct. Incomplete fat suppression has nothing to do with anything in your body or you as a patient. "fat suppression" is a technique used in MRI to make the images appear a certain way. It is often technically difficult to obtain complete suppression so we as radiologists refer to this finding as "incomplete fat suppression." i hope this helps.

Very safe in general: A plain ct scan really only caries the risk of a fairly modest radiation exposure, so we typically only start to worry about this for people who get many cts in a single year.  If it is being done with intravenous contrast, then there is a risk of allergic reaction to the iodine, as well as some risk of kidney damage in those with underlying kidney risk factors (eg elderly, diabetes).

Lack of experience: Basically, you don't know what you are looking at and have no way to make heads or tails of what the images represent. The, "spots" you are seeing may be normal structures or not. That's why we radiologists spend years learning how to make sense of those pictures.

Spinal tap: Diagnosis of meningitis is not by ct scan, but spinal tap. Obtaining cerebrospinal fluid allows your physician to find out about severity of the meningitis, as well as help find out what organism caused it. This information is important for treatment.

AVM grades: Avms are graded by their size, location and vascular structure. To determine the grade of your avm you ned to have a digital subtraction angiogram. An mra will not do.  Once  the grade is established the treatment can be determined.  Treatment can range from surgery to embolization with polymers to radiosurgery. Often a combination of of these may be used. Get the angiogram and discuss the options.

No: You do not need a specialist to order a ct scan, however your insurance may not pay for it unless a specialist orders it. This is one of the problems in us healthcare. Any doctor or qualified healthcare provider can order the scan...But insurance may not pay for it. Check with your insurer first.

Both very safe: However, MRI is likely safer because it does not use ionizing radiation like ct.

Mri is essentially a very fancy radio, and ct is a very fancy x-ray machine, taking images from multiple directions to make a picture.

Contrast agents, usually injected into a vein as part of both MRI and ct, have risks as well, however they are very low, well known and easily avoided or managed.

i had a high resolution brain ct scan which came back 100% normal, would this have shown any anyuresms or tumors? i'm scared

CT is good: A high resolution brain ct scan is a good screening tool to look for brain masses or hemorrhages. A better scan is likely an MRI with mra (mr angiography). This has better sensitivity and resolution and also avoids radiation exposure. You have to take into account also any symptoms or history that would suggest an aneurysm or brain tumor.Is there a family history of aneurysms? Are there headaches?

No: The simple, brief answer is no, rather it is the opposite of shrinkage essentially.

ive been waking up nauseous and throw up stomach acid.  had brain ct scan.  could that miss brain tumor?

Accepted Answer

Not likely: Your symptoms suggest you may be having problems with gastro-esophageal reflux, more than concern about a brain tumor.  It is unlikely that a brain tumor causing vomiting would be missed on a high quality CT study.
