Knuckle Pads: Knuckle pads are benign, asymptomatic, well-circumscribed, smooth, firm, skin-colored papules, nodules, or plaques, located in the skin over the dorsal aspects of the metacarpophalangeal (mcp) and interphalangeal (ip) joints. A history of repetitive trauma related to sports or occupation is often present.

: Yes. Your hands are not designed for such self inflicted trauma. Discuss this with your doc who will likely refer you for treatment of this symptom of OCD.

Causes of swelling?: There are many possible causes of swelling, pain and/or redness of the knuckles.  These include overuse, sprains, arthritis (wear &amp; tear and rheumatoid are the most common), infection and injury.  Candle wax may provide temporary relief by warming the joints, but, due to the high risk of burns, in my mind, it's not OK.  If your arthritic joints are bothering you, by all means, consult a doctor.

Paronychia is the: term for an infection that develops along the edge of the fingernail or toenail. Try warm soaks for 15 minutes in a 50% solution of antibacterial soap in water. Do this three or four times a day. Paronychia is usually caused by common skin bacteria entering the skin around the nail that has been damaged by dishwashing, other irritants, or finger sucking. If it does not improve, see your doctor.

Eczema will get you: at a very young age, and it continues throughout your life.  Sometimes a certain lotion or chemical in the lotion will make it worse.  Try to use different unscented moisturizers, even prescription ones, to see if it would help alleviate the problem .  I would put the moisturizer on several times a day. Eczema: Usually a rash like this is eczema.  Frequently limited to the hands and sometimes associated with exposure to solvents / detergent or metals.

i have a rash on my left hand. appeared suddenly. does not itch. red, blotchy, over knuckles, top of hand, and somewhat traveled up the arm. no idea what caused it...i noticed this morning. i thought at first it looked like i'd slept on it wrong?

Contact rash: You may have come in contact with something which triggered this rash. Avoid immersion in water, irritants and fragrance. Apply a thin layer of steroid cream three times daily, and if there is worsening, fever or associated symptoms, please see your PCP.
