Reaction 2 particles: from the cotton that is often used to filter heroin (and other drugs) once they are dissolved in water, and usually heated over a flame ('cooked'). The cotton particles cause a foreign body/immune response, especially in the lungs, with cough, fever, chills, sometimes chest pain and shortness of breath, as well as other autoimmune symptoms - muscle aches, weakness, malaise (french for feeling bad)

Talk to your son: Cotton Fever is problem seen in IV drug users. It is not contagious, but could be seen in a group of users who share the same drugs. Given that your child is in rehabilitation already, he is not at risk for Cotton Fever. However, it is important that you discuss this with him and/or his counselor to be sure that he will not be involved with this 'friend' when he is released from rehabilitation.

The usual.: Cotton fever refers to the transient eleva-
tion in temperature within minutes after injec-
tion of drug filtered through cotton, or after
shooting the cottons. Symptoms include fever,
chills, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomit-
ing, and muscle aches.
NOT infected blood vessel, skin, or heart valve. 
Lasts average 12 hr. Rane 6 to 48 BUT improving by 12.
Fluids and  tylenol helpful.

See a doctor: so-called "cotton fever" involves shaking chills, cough and chest pain most of the time, not just "feeling hot."  You cannot tell the difference between this and having a severe infection like endocarditis without a doctor. Your friend needs medical help and needs to stop using IV drugs, and if you have similar issues, so do you.  Get help for both of you. Alanon can help you help your friend.

38 days ago, unprotected sex with woman. everything was fine until a week ago. low grade fever, chills but now as i write this my mouth feels like cotton and have a white tongue with white spots in mouth. im afraid to test. thrush? am i a lost cause?

: The best thing is to get tested rather than the debilitating effect of anxiety. The STD screen including HIV testing if negative gives you a new lease that allows you make better choices in the future; otherwise you get treated fast to have the best prognosis possible.

Urate crystals?: Often we see that orange tint or even crystals in the diapers of children who are not well hydrated. Has this happened before? It is encouraging that you were able to elicit a more yellow urine, but I would concentrate on making sure he's drinking enough.
