It is an estimate: The more components put into the equation (usually the closer an approximation it is). For instance, a tread mill that doesn't require weight is less accurate then one that does.

Accepted Answer

Small meal okay: A small snack meal is okay before aerobic exercise, but if you eat a lot you could get a stomach ache.  Drink water also.

That is incredible!!: I don't hear that too often these days--doing 2 hours worth of exercise/day at age 68 is awesome. You actually answered your own question. If you are not healthy, you won't be able to do that for 2 hours. I am beaten by nearly 30 yrs and i don't think i can last 2 hrs on the treadmill--hope i can do 1/2 of that at 68. Keep up the good work--i can see u beating 100 yr mark. Good luck.

Yes: Bulging discs are seen in normal individuals.  A routine exercise program can help with lower back pain.  See your physician before starting any new exercise program.

can you use a treadmill if you have a herniated disk?

Accepted Answer

Probably could: Keep the treadmill level, at a relatively low speed, perhaps no more than 3 mph.  Use for about 10-15 min initially, and slowly build up duration and speed but perhaps work closely with physical therapist or trainer to be safe.  If done correctly, you will maintain fitness, while your herniated disk desiccates and shrinks.

Bike: Generally, impact such as running, treadmill, stairmaster causing axial compression (downward pressure) on the back and disc and not recommended.  Stationary biking is much less stressful in this regard but remenber to keep your posture straight when on the bike - feel better.

Yes: There is no correct speed, you should do what you feel is the right speed for you and you can always adjust the speed to fit your needs.

Exercise: It is commendable that you are looking for opportunities to exercise while raising your family. Treadmill at home is an excellent way to get yourself some aerobic exercise. Most of my patients who do this find that the early morning hours are the best time, before the children wake up and before you start your full day. Good luck!

Depends: On the spefics and how severe. Discuss with your cardiologist.

Hip pain: You are too young to get degenerative joint disease. It won't hurt to see your doctor to evaluate you for other forms of arthritis.
