Punctal Plugs: You already have most of the symptoms of dry eyes.  Most common symptom is foreign body sensation. Occasionally there is paradox tearing from the lacrimal gland due to irritation.  You are using a lot of drops. First you should have a workup for sjogren's syndrome by a rheumatologist.  Then you need to have punctal plugs placed by an ophthalmologist that will decrease need for drops dramatically.

after 30 min of flying, i  get dry, bloodshot eyes. don't wear contact lenses on flight. i use refresh dry  eye drops but the redness stays. any ideas?

Dry air: Most airline cabins are pressurized to feel as if they're about 8000 feet in altitude.  As such, the air is very, very dry.  Keep using your drops, and consider closing your eyes (maybe using a sleep mask) and sleeping while you listen to some music. There is a moistening ointment, I believe, which might last longer than the drops while you're flying.

my bottom eye lid is swollen. no redness only slight discomfort. should i be concerned? i use ointment in my bottom eyelid at night for dry eye.

Possible concern: Dry eye is common, can respond well to ointment but does not cause eyelid swelling.  Is the tenderness at one spot or diffuse?  Is there a palpable nodule?  Is this short term or has it been there awhile?   Try using very warm washcloths 4-5 times a day on the lid and if it disappears, it was likely a stye.  If still present after 4-5 days, have an ophthalmologist look at it.

See eye md: Need to find out the cause of this, so get an appointment with your eye doctor. In the mean time try some artificial tear drops, these you can buy over the counter.

Accepted Answer

Yes: This is indeed true, but sometimes there is a treatable or reversible cause of the dry eyes such as a medication or supplement causing dryness.  An example of such would be frequent use of Sudafed or other stimulant medications for allergies.  Allergies themselves can also cause red eyes which would generally be itchy, not dry.  Exposure to irritants at home/at work could also cause this.

Discharge from eyes: It is not possible to make an accurate diagnosis with limited information on this forum. The symptoms you describe are consistent with conjunctivitis which is most often viral, but can be bacterial. One needs to be examined to be sure there is no other lesion in the eye that could be associated. Please go see a doctor for a proper examination, diagnosis, and treatment recommendation.

Possibly : Contact lens wearers are more predisposed to ocular irritations, whether it be from dryness, allergies, inflammation or infection. The redness you describe may be from dryness or irritation from protein deposits on the contacts. If the contacts are uncomfortable to wear, could be too tight. Definitely, yes: This is a rare condition that results from disruption of the sympathetic nerves supplying the eye also called Horners' syndrome. The classic symptoms are upper eyelid drooping, pupillary constriction, anhidrosis and possible photophobia.

Comforting: Similasan is a tear replacement with no therapeutic qualities.  It is generally used for eye dryness, and may provide comfort when pink eye is present.  It will not alter the course of the self limited infection of the lining of the eye.  No harm will come from its use.

Tears not enough: Dry eye disease is treated with artificial tear supplementation, humidifier to increase the ambient humidity, omega 3 supplementation , and possible pharamcologic intervention, ie.  Restasis.  If you have meibomian gland dysfunction an an evaporative component to your dry eye, treatment can be directed there as well.  Your ophthalmologist should be able to come up with an effective plan.
