Be lucky, very lucky: 80% of all people will have significant back pain during their lifetime. So prevention is a bit of a loaded term. However, core strength and good ergonomics go a long way at minimizing back pain complaints. Do not smoke. That is about the only significant influence that can be modified. Avoid reaching and lifting/bending away from the body especially heavy weight. The rest is truly chance.

Work with a trainer: There are no specific exercises that will prevent a lower back injury.  If you are doing an aggressive program, it is best to work with a trainer or have your program directed by a physical therapist, professionals who are trained to monitor muscle usage and strain.  In general, temper your weight program with stretching and flexibility activities and monitor muscle tightness and spasm.

Disc dis. or arthrit: Commonest cause of back pain is degenerative disease of spine which is arthritis. Bulging discs may also cause similar symptoms. See a neurologist or orthopedic.

Kidney Failure: The most common causes of chronic renal failure are poorly controlled diabetes and high blood pressure.
