Frostbite injury: Soft tissue injuries that occur as a result of prolonged exposure to cold environments can initially look as if there is no injury whatsoever. However, during the course of the body's rewarming of the area, one my experience marked to moderate pain, blistering, and in severe cases, gangrene. Expect the skin changes to takes days to resolve if possible. Pain following frostbite can last many years.

Fracture or PF.: Could be many things, but the two most likely are either a stress fracture or plantar fasciitis. The best way to know is to get an x-ray of your foot. Another clue is when it hurts: stress fractures are all the time, while pf hurts most with the first few steps in the morning, or after sitting for a long time. See a podiatrist to rule out nerve entrapment.

Referred back pain: Unfortunately, back pain all too often does cause foot and leg pain if it is caused by nerve problems."sciatica" is a painful nerve condition that is due to pinching of the major thigh nerve from the back and sends pain down to the foot.  See your family doctor first for an examination of your back problems to isolate a correct diagnosis.

Hard to say: There are many causes of pain in the foot without any apparent trauma.  Without knowing more about your boy's health history and getting a look at his tootsie, i'd be misleading you with any specific answers.

It's always safest and best to bring it in to a podiatrist, perhaps get an x-ray, and know for certain.  Hope your boy feels better and good luck!

Call your surgeon: pain of that severity radiating into your leg after back surgery to take pressure off the nerve root is concerning and might indicate swelling or other problems at the surgical site.  Please get in touch with the operating surgeon right away.

It might: Diabetics  can develop neuropathy due to altered function caused by longterm hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugars). See a podiatrist- they can help make this diagnosis, and rule out other causes of pain in the feet.
