Medications: There are medications that can help - Neurontin (gabapentin) and Elavil to name two possibilities.  There is also a modality known at "anodyne therapy" that some physical therapists offer that can also be beneficial.

Distal polyneuropath: Skin biopsy is useful for detection of peripheral neuropathy predominantly affecting small unmyelinated nerve fibers, likley ruled out in your case. Depending on the clinical presentation, nerve & possibly muscle biopsy  are needed. Emg/ncv, MRI (cns/spine), labs including blood and CSF serologic studies, & consultation w/ neuro & int med/rheum.

New patient exam: Certainly the neurologist will ask you many questions,followed by a hands on exam. You may be asked to have a nerve conduction test. That is one way to determine how severe your problem is. Your degree of pain is also a good indicator of severity.

Several options: The are certain meds that can help. Pyridoxine may help (vitamin b6). Speak with a neurologist.

There are some: Other options. After increasing Gabapentin to where the side affects get to you, you can try Lyrica (pregabalin) as well. If that class of meds is not helping, consider medications like Cymbalta which also can help. Consider topical pain creams containing ketamine that can be very beneficial for neuropathy pain. Also try desensitization techniques like contrast baths. Make sure to have regular foot exams too.

No: Lets find out why you have painful neuropathy first.  Have you seen a neurologist and been tested?  What is causing the neuropathy?  Metro phoenix has top tier neurologists thanks to barrows (and mayo).  Accurately identify cause first, then best treatment.  (small fiber neuropathy; diabetes; plexopathy; b12; alcohol; etc).  Gabapentin and Lyrica (pregabalin) act nearly identically.  Dosing optimized?

Try urea: Neuropathy affects the biochemical function of skin, sometimes this leads to dry skin.   Try a urea based lotion/cream.

i have neuropathy in my feet & when i get out of the shower, my toes get a vertical  red streak over  them  with stabbing type pain.  why is this?

Red streak: You may have infection between your toess, but because of your neuropathy you may not aware of. See yor doctor and get it checked out.
